Oh look! Another case review! Yes, we love cases. We can't get enough of them, and want to review them all day long. There probably aren't enough cases in the world to keep us satisfied.

On the chopping block today is the SGP Linear Color Series in Gunmetal, and a bonus SGP Option Frame in blue! We like it, sort of... We also trash the living heck out of it with a bunch of keys just for fun. Read on and check out the damage after the break (caution: viewer discretion advised, sort of).
We at bighugenerd have several criteria for what makes a good iPhone case. It needs to protect our phone (surprise!), be made of reasonably high-quality parts, and have accurate cutouts for all the functions, ports and buttons. Whether it's a folio, sleeve or a Bumper-style case doesn't bother us so much. Life is the variety of spice (or something like that). So we approach the Linear Color Series with some trepidation, because it has a few obvious issues right out of the box. But first things first!

The Linear Color Series is fully compatible with your iPhone 4 and 4S, whether it's GSM or CDMA. This is because, unlike the SGP Neo Hybrid II EX this case dresses a little more... casually. The power button, volume controls and mute switch are all left open. On the one hand this makes adjusting the mute switch a simple affair. On the other hand, more of your iPhone is left open to the elements...

So let's splay this thing open!

Boy is this thing plastic. There's not a hint of silicone anywhere here to protect the phone in loving embrace. In the case's favor, though, getting this thing together is a cinch. Slide the top piece on, then slip the rear panel in from the bottom and slide it up, and then pop the top piece on. It all snaps together well. Be aware, you can't just use the top and bottom piece without the rear panel, as it doesn't hold together well without it, and would probably come apart in your pocket or under normal use.

With all three pieces together it's very solid, and getting it apart really requires some yanking.

And now let's talk about one thing we don't really like. As you can see from the above picture, it's really, really plastic. After shoving the assembled case into a pocket with some keys and jangling them around together, taking the phone out showed the rear panel was already somewhat scratched. In literally ten seconds! Yes, yes, sure it's a case and is designed to take the brunt of the damage so your phone doesn't, but that doesn't mean your case has to look ghastly after moments in a pocket with keys!

At this point, we put on the blue SGP Frame to see how it looks. Not bad, if you like grey and blue together!

OK so it's not our favorite color combination, but it's definitely thoughtful on SGP's part to let us be able to change the frame colors on a whim. The extra frame itself is around $10, so not an outrageous expense (the package with frame and rear insert is $30).

OK, so here's the moment you've been waiting for (maybe). The Keys Test. Similar to the Will It Blend YouTube videos, except with no blender, and just some keys. The test is very scientific:

Mission Statement: To figure out how well this case will hold up to abuse in your pocket over amount of time. We're not sure how long x is because we're not those kinds of scientists.

Test Method: Rub around rear of case with these:

Results:

Ouch! I suppose it's up to you to decide whether you prefer the back of your phone to be scratched, or your case to be scratched. Either way, this grey case did not hold up well to dragging keys around it briefly. But let's wrap this thing up.

So What's to Like?

We like the simplicity of SGP's Linear Color Series, with mixing and matching done easily, it's a great idea. The parts fit together nicely, and all the buttons are easily accessible.

So What's Not to Like?

Like other Bumper-style cases, the dock connector is no longer compatible with all third-party accessories due to its recess, and neither is the headphone jack with the added thickness of the case. Leaves buttons on side and top open to the elements. Dust and dirt gets in between the plastic and your phone due to no silicone barrier. Scratches pretty easily (really easily).

Verdict:

You know, if you get past the easily-scratched issue, it's really not a bad case, but it's also nothing spectacular. While we applaud SGP for making something fun of the mixing and matching of parts, we wish they'd have come up with something slightly more resilient. We therefore award the SGP Linear Color Series a reasonable three nerds.

Big thank you to Delbert Kim and Jason Lee at SGP for the review sample! Amazon links below:

The color cases are really beautiful and fit well with the iPhone. If we don’t get a proper case for our phone, it will look very boring. Unfit case can lose the beauty of the phone and at the same time attractive cases can make your cheap phone also look costly.

Like different Bumper-genre cases, the berth connector is no longer congruity along sum third-junket accessories rightful to its nook, besides neither is the headphone jack along the added dimension of the case. Moves buds on flank further acme liable to the fires. Remains furthermore grime gains in intermediate the formative furthermore your phone unpaid to no silicone obstruction. Scratches charming freely (actually freely).
